The simple answer is yes, you can, but you’ll find it very challenging past a certain point. A good rule of thumb is the older your car key is, the more likely you’ll be able to get it replaced.

We don’t not recommend that you attempt to replace sophisticated car keys such as proximity keys unless you have the skills, knowledge and the right equipment. That being said, we give you all the information needed to see if you can do it yourself.

  • The first step of the car key replacement process is to gather all the information to make the correct key, starting with the VIN. The VIN is a unique number usually located on the right-hand side of your windscreen
  •  You need to obtain your Reg number, alongside the model and your car’s make. Once you have all the relevant information, it’s advisable to call around to find somebody like us who can program the car key for you.
  • If your manual key is still in good working order, it should start the car. You can also put your old transponder chip into the new fob and find a way to synchronise it with the remote. It’s worth exploring some of the more well known online marketplaces such as Aliexpress, eBay and Amazon to find the one you need.
  • Please make sure that you can program the key-fob yourself before placing an order. As we mentioned previously, if you own an older model, there is a possibility that you might be able to synchronise the key yourself. Here are some older car models as examples

  • 05/59 Nissan X Trail,
  • 08/58 Reg Mazda 5
  • 10/60 Ford Fiesta

This manual procedure involves programming the car key without using professional auto locksmith equipment.

Transponder key replacement

Oak auto locksmith

A transponder key is a simple key blade with a transponder chip inside the key head. It looks functions and acts just like a standard car key. The transponder, chip-based security systems were introduced in the mid-’90s. Unfortunately, transponder keys are notoriously hard to distinguish from a simple bladed key that cannot be programmed. When we give you car key replacement quote we offer you different key types depending on the service you need.

The immobiliser system not only signals your car’s ignition coil but also sends back data to allow it to start. In this process, a coded transponder chip reacts by sending a set of information that enables the engine to turn over and crank.

Remote Car Key replacement

Remote Car Keys are usually flip-out style key fobs. If your is key has an older style remote fob we can replace your car key with an upgraded flip key. You can open your car with them by pressing the unlock button and inserting the key blade into the ignition to start the vehicle.

The transponder chip and the remote chip communicate with different parts of the vehicle’s security system. Two different functions can be activated by pressing the lock button on your remote fob. One is to lock the car; the other is to arm the anti-theft system. Which then can be de-activated by pressing the unlock button. Even if you can open the door with your key, the alarm will sound and likely immobilise the car.

A proximity key allows you to start your car by simply pressing a button (without inserting your key).To fully understand how the proximity key works, it’s essential to understand the basics of the immobiliser itself first.

A transponder chip inside your car key can receive, process and return information from the immobiliser. The advantage of this from a technical viewpoint is that the data only needs to be transferred over a short distance.

There is no ignition coil in keyless system controlled vehicles. Instead, a proximity sensor recognises your key when it’s close enough. Then, you can leave it in your pocket. We require additional information to replace Nissan keyless fobs. We need to know the BCM number of the car.

Emergency Car Key Blade

Oak auto locksmith

Besides all the modern keyless solutions, all cars have a manually operated central locking system. In addition, all cars come with a unique mechanical key code that can be used to open the vehicle manually.

The auto locksmiths can retrieve the key code and cut a new key blade by decoding the lock. These blades come without a transponder chip. The emergency blade cannot start the car, but it comes in handy when the remote locking system or the key fails. It also helps if you want to protect the key fob.

“The emergency blade is part of the fundamental key programming process, even if the emergency blade cannot start the car. To communicate with the vehicle, we need to switch the ignition on with an emergency blade. ”

We can program a new car key to the car without the blade unless it’s a keyless vehicle.

Key Card

Oak auto locksmith

This card style key type is specific to Renault vehicles. It can open the car remotely and start the engine once the key is inserted into the key slot. Like proximity keys, you don’t need a key blade to open or start the car, but there is a hidden blade inside for emergencies.

If your key card has lost its connection to the vehicle, you could use the key blade inside the card to open the doors. However, these keycards have a common issue: they can lose their remote functionality but still start the vehicle.

What are the solutions to these common Renault key card problems?

  • Unresponsive remote card: First, if your remote does not work, we advise that you try to replace the coin cell battery (CR2032)
  • When dashboard shows: “Key Card not detected message”: The cause of the problem can be either a faulty key card or faulty key card sensor. A simple temporary solution can solve this so the vehicle can detect your key card. Insert your key card in the card reader slot, and stick something like a thin plastic card on the upper side of the key. Use the card to slightly push down to force the vehicle to dismiss this message.
  • If none of the above work, please call us on 07747 112039. so we can some out to help you.
